Upper Bulkley River: Streambank Stabilization

These sites located along the Upper Bulkley River were restored through streambank stabilization and live Willow planting. Posts were pushed in to "pin" the bank in place and Willow wattle fencing was wound around the posts to prevent future loss of soil during flooding events. Erosion mats were placed around the posts and live Willow stakes planted behind the posts.

ABOUT US

The Morice Water Monitoring Trust (MWMT) is directed through its Trust Agreement to gather baseline data within the Morice Watershed Management Area (MWMA) to determine if water quality is sufficient to maintain the well-being of the Wet’suwet’en (in relation to fish and drinking water). The Trust has expanded its geographical range to include the Upper Bulkley.

Northwest Research and Monitoring, in collaboration with the MWMT, received funding in 2021 from the Healthy Watersheds Initiative (HWI) for riparian restoration, watershed education and outreach in the Upper Bulkley and Morice area. The project completed the first phase of a multi-year riparian restoration project in 2021. Effectiveness monitoring and riparian planting is ongoing with funding from the MWMT.

The HWI is a Watersheds BC program investing in watershed conservation and restoration projects, while strengthening relationships with First Nations and Indigenous-led organizations.
